    What to choose

    Hi

I have a restricted budjet but at the same time I have been doing 35 mm photographs for many years and I like to have creativity in my pcitures.

I also want to have an optical zoom to have equivalent possibility than with my 70-210 objective with the traditional camera.

I hesitate between two models: Canon Powershot S1 IS and Kodak Easychare DX 7590. this first one seems interesting but it is only 3.2 mP and I am wondering if I will still be able to do enlargements of pictures up to 8x10 inc. with only 3,2 mP. Can you help me with advice? Would you have other models in mind in this proce range (in Canada were are talking about 450$ CAN)

    Thanks a lot

The Canon A520 offers full manual controls, 4x optical zoom, and support for conversion lenses should you need more telephoto power. It's a damn good little camera and is certainly within your price range even with accessories.

The Canon S1 is also a damn good camera, though it doesn't have a few things that the A520 has (such as an AF-assist lamp). With 3.2 megapixels you can print decent-quality 8x10s but you can't do much cropping. Then again, with all that zoom power, you probably won't need to crop much.

The Canon S2 would probably meet all your needs, but it's still a little over your budget. If you can scrape together a bit more money, it might be perfect for you. Also look into the Panasonic Lumix FZ5.

The Kodak's got a long zoom but it's not stabilized; if you plan on using the telephoto end without a tripod, your photos will probably come out blurry. Just sayin'...

    Don't worry about 8X10 with 3.2MP...

You can do fine with prints at that size, in fact 2MP will print a nice 8X10. More pixels will give you more cropping room, which you might find beneficial.
    Let a be your umbrella!

Panasonic FZ-4, 337 us money much better then either camera and offers great speed. S1 has serious long zoom focus issues (in fact I can say same for s2, I was disapointed by it though otherwise fantastic camera but AF for me is key) and the kodak pictures come out muddy at 8x10.
