O.K., lame I know, here I am replying to my own post
Anyway, any input on comparing this second attempt at both cropping and playing with levels and curves would be appreciated.
My gut reaction is the crop makes it better, the levels and curves is heavy handed.

I actually prefer the orig photo - mostly because it looks more natural to me.
This is, however, my personal preference - I nearly always like 'true to life' images and I reckon you got the balance well sorted on the first one. True the sky was washed out - and maybe if you have isolated that and tweaked only the sky it may have helped it a bit.
As for the crop - again - purely down to choice - if you prefer your crop then it's right for you - I quite like the wider view with this landscape image.
I agree with Geoff, the edit looks a bit unrealistic. The contrast is too high, some colours are oversaturated, there is a weird magneta cast.
I also prefer the wider crop of the first one.
The first is quite nice. Good job with the filters and blurring the water.
If you don't mind, I did some editing on your image. Here is how I would edit it:
I used capture NX. I darkened the sky using curves, removed the magnetta cast with several control points. I also brightened shadows on the land and raised the contrast using curves.

Thanks to everyone who took time to comment try their own hand at cropping and adjusting. Funny how people who weren't there can make a photo look more like I remember the place than I could. I'll keep on plugging, thanks for all the input.
Ok here is my take on it. A little less saturation from Prospero with the cropping from SpecialK.
You're right on the saturation, I boosted it a bit too far. I often edit a picture too heavily and need to drop the saturation again when I go over the pictures a second time.

Bass, I agree with Geoff, original photo is my favorite, do not like cropped version.
~ which all goes to prove it was a pretty good shot in the first place and
all the crops and tweaks are just about personal interpretations
Personally - the only crop I might do is to reduce it from 4:3 format to 3:2 and lose a little forground - but I like the way the water leads your eye out to the open lake, so not too much off thank you!
