Macro Mode Advice For A95 Novice

I'm trying to create good macro shots under the "M" settings, but have only done the opposite.

I've tried taking one of a willow [out-doors] and it was out of focus. I tried taking one of my mom's roses [in-doors] on her dresser and they were too washed out by the flash. I don't know if the numbers on the left of the lcd mean the distance to aim away from [I'm guessing] the subject or what the numbers on the right represent.

What settings should I use for good shots?

    Thank you.

"M" setting is usually for Manual Focus, you want to look for the MF button, with a small flower on it. try raising your ISO indoors, do some research on your other settings, theres a lot you can do with that camera. hope this helps

keep in mind that shake is really realy imporant. as you go in closer, the effects of slight movements get magnified. use a flash or a tripod. if you use AF, the camera may try to act stupid and focus exactyl where you don't want it to. watch out!

Thank you for the responses. It's hard to get questions like this answered.
