Stopping down the kit lense?

I have read many times about stopping down the XT kit lense between f/8-11. I mostly shoot in P mode. If I notice That I am below these these numbers should I ususally stop it down. What if the f/ # is 13 or highter, should I stop it up?

yeah, open it up and to keep the same exposure lower the ISO and/or raise the shutter speed.
