Hey, thanks a lot Geoff. I'm still learning and right now I guess a lot. I think the key to understanding though is that there are two exposures, the flash exposure and the ambient light exposure. The flash exposure is made up of the ISO, aperture and flash power. The ambient light exposure is made up of ISO, shutter speed and aperture. So to change the background light only, then alter the shutter speed. To change the subject light only, change the flash power.

Hey that makes a lot of sense! - my OM2 FSLR used to just sort it all out for me with it's dedicated flash gun. But with my D80 I do notice if I get the light balanced without flash first at a similar or identical flash shutter speed then I get better results - but it's fiddly. Plus I can't get to grips with the flash sinc speeds - but that's another long story never mind

I really like the environment you included in that shot. If I had seen it, I probably would have zoomed in on the kid, maybe tried to get some of the car in the shot but I would have kept the men on the ground out of the shot. But then I see shots like this ... having them in there really adds to the depth of the picture and the "feel" of what the scene was really like. Great work.
