It's a little known landmark on a medium sized Pacific Island (Honshu) while flying to Osaka from Haneda (Tokyo).

In all the time I spent in Japan, including several Shinkansen trips to Osaka, Nagoya, and Nara, I never made it to Mt. Fuji.

Okay, thought that it might be "The Hooj", but not sure because of your statement that "I assume that you have taken the road going up the mountain". Of course that road does NOT go to the top of the mountain, it only goes to the 5th Station - an elevation of 2,305 meters. Mt. Fuji itself is 3,776 meters. And, I too have never made it to the top - too dang many people waiting in line. You are not supposed to leave the marked trails when climbing the mountain, and I have heard horror stories of an old man stopping to rest for 30 minutes out a mile in front of you and therefore everybody has to stop and wait for him to get going again. Yes, I have heard several horror stories of that climb. I have no desire to go to the top of Mt. Fuji. And, in addition, there is no forest, no flowers, just scenery - given a clear day. I'd rather spend my climbing time on mountains where I can find orchids, violets and other amazing flowers IN ADDITION to scenery.

In that case I may forgo the climb and instead just attend the dragonboat races at Yamashita Park. Less travel, lots of fun.

Something tells me that we have hijacked this thread...
