if anyone can tell me what the hell threshold means it would be much aprpeciated.
thanks adam. that seagull shot is actually blurry cos of wind and camera shake. not as sharp as i like but the effect grew on me. interestingly this is exactly the same effect i spent ages trying to acheiev with strobes a while ago. this time the condtions just worked out that i didnt need flash at all, just metered off the gull and thats pretty much untouched, SOOC.
Very nice, rooz.
Threshold, roughly, is how far apart pixels have to be in tonality before the unsharp mask starts to do it's thing. It's not of huge consquence here, but if you leave it too low in something like portraits, you'll start to see some very blotchy faces.

I won't argue. The captures are nice, even if the exposure was jacked. I'm starting to shoot in manual more. I'm getting tired of the inconsistencies of the metering in aperture priority (I'm assuming that was your problem). The last time I shot in overcast weather the metering wasn't even close.

the meter was going crazy cos the birds were zooming around so fast all over the joint. cant blame the cameras metering for that really, just user error. like you said, i should have chimped and seen they were under then switched to manual.
we live and learn Lukas.

Another crack at the wedge tailed Eagle and another failure. this guy is becoming my nemisis. Better than my last efforts but still not there yet. we got inside the enclosure with him but he was quite nervous, (so was I !!), so we had to abort for another time. what i want todo is shoot up at him against the blue sky to get rid of the piss poor background and use some strobes.

Those are crazy shots Rooz...
There are some colony of wild lorikeets where I live and sometimes they land just in front of my house. However, they always land at the most inconvinience times.

So, this is what your failures look like? I could fail way better than that!

failure is a strong word i guess Lukas. i think that was my frustration talking cos i cant get a "killer shot" that i'm really proud of. to be honest all those shots really do is show the sharpness of the lens, the resolving power and incredible quality of the d300. these are uncropped and unaltered. so stick that camera/ lens in anyones hands and thats what you'll get...hardly something for me to take away and say "look what I did." do you know what i mean ?

Well, you still got composition, exposure and timing. Did you use your flash for these? I can't tell anymore. It looks like maybe you did on the last one.
