Great timing on the heron shot. Patience pays off.

It was a bit of standing in the cold, but I credit a decent burst rate as much as patience. Maybe the next camera will get above 5fps (like I need even more to sort through). I stopped out at the same spot for a bit during lunch today. Fairly certain it was the same heron. I didn't see him catch anything, but I got a good butt shot when he flew off.

Another very good shot. The Oly and 400 do a great job under your command. 5fps should be plenty. Not sure that an extra frame or two would help, as your timing always seems to be spot on.

Thanks D70, The past two outings were with the Sigma 50-500. Mostly in manual focus with a monopod. I find that the Sigma hunts much more than the Oly 50-200. The flip side is I have to adjust to the swapped focus and zoom ring positions between them. I really prefer the focus on the front ring of the Oly and the Zuiko rings are much smoother to operate. But the reach of an effective 1000mm sure is nice.

I thought seriously of getting a "bigma" a few years ago, but then came the great crash. Actually, most of my shooting is in the 24-80 range anyway. Once in a while I break out the 55-200VR or the 70-300. The two Sigmas I have also have a tendency to hunt a bit.

I think that the current 'Bigma' is better in the focusing department. They dropped the 4/3rds mount when they added stabilization.

Yup. At ~$1500 it's a heck of a lens (especially with OS added). But a hard sell to the CFO.

    Falconest,

I was inspired into patience by that shot of yours. This one heron seems a bit more tolerant of humans than most. His fishing hole is right off a small parking lot.
