Thanks. On the second photo I believe I used the "spot" focus since the bird kept moving around. I don't know if that makes a difference or not. I also posted a photo using the same lens on the "Abstracts" thread of a remote control car flipping over and to me, it all seems in focus. The only thing that really gives the motion away in the abstract photo is the rooster tail or the dirt spinning off one of the rear tires. If anything, I would have thought it would have been some camera setting I moved. Perhaps, I should get a diary and log everything for a while to help me figure out how I am shooting these photos.

It's not your focus point (it appears perfect on my screen), but the "quality" of the out-of-focus areas that is in question. Do a google on Bokeh if you're unfamiliar with this and you should see what I mean.

Most of this stuff is usually related to optics - so I don't think you are doing anything wrong as a user! If you are getting good results elsewhere than maybe it's just an isolated incident under tricky lighting?

Thanks for the info. I'm off to read the posts and google some bokeh.

Regarding the lighting, in the second photo the sun was behind the tree (not setting yet) and in the other photo I mentioned, the sun would have been higher up and more behind me. Anyway, thanks again for your help and the information. I have a lot to read and learn.

TNB was it a windy day when you took the Eagle shot??? this would explain the tree in the background which appears to me to have motion blurr

The wind was blowing a little bit though I never really thought about it until you mentioned it. The tree was also probably around 10+ yards or so behind the eagle.
