Sony DSC-V3 -are there any competition for my needs?
Hi there!
I originally set out to get a Nikon D70 or the Panasonic FZ20. I went analouge instead and for supply i need a smaller more portable digital camera than the two mentioned. What I need in the camera is:
1. Portability (to fit in a pocket of a jacket)
2. Manual control over at least shutter speed and aperture
3. Color should be BLACK
4. LCD should be no less than 2.0" PREFERABLE 2.5"
zoom and pixels are not so important. I tend to mess up my pictures alot. To get a clean shot I stick with analouge -so digital for me is more playing around than trying to get a sensor that's maybe 2% better than another one.. That's not so important for me. That's not to say what's best analouge/digital -just to say what I use it for :-)
Are there any real contenders to the Sony DSC-V3???
Cheers!

If you follow the reviews, the Canon G-6 equals and in some cases beats the Sony V-3 by a good margin. The F 2.0 lens, the articulated LCD, and even a rather excellent digital zoom give Canon G-6 some real advantages.

Thanx Sarah, but I can't live with the silver finish of the Canon. I tried once to have a similar finish on a camera -and even though I tried to focus on the USE of it instead og the finish/design, it continously annoyed me..

I am a V3 man! But I will say the picture quality of the g6 is awesome and I love the articulating LCD. The powershot Pro 1 is black and is probably better in most cases, but for a little more cash, and more of a competition for the DSC-F828. But I suspect the price is going down, as it is a year old now!
Still I preferred the V3 due to its video capabilities, fast focusing, and the awesome price I got it for ($467). If it wasnt the V3 it was going to be the G6 or Pro 1.

Speaklightly is 100% right and the other advantage in the G6 is that it takes better pictures. The sony is a bit soft for my liking and the colors are to saturated. If you can get over the silver color the camera is a top choice. Or wait and see what color the G7 will be. It should come out in several months. Steves Digicams has a side by side compairison of the G6 and V3 here is the address. It is at the bottom of the page.

I 've a lot of magazines that compare the Sony V3 in front of the G6. In the most situations the V3 was in front :
- Autofocus faster than the G6
- Better image in backlit than the G6
- Better color rendering than the G6
- Better sensibility than the G6 (the noise is visible from 50 iso with the G6)
- Better lens than the G6 (less distorsion at wide angle)
I've seen the photos of the comparison between the V3 and the G6 at the site Steves-Digicams.com and personnaly i 've found the images taken with the v3 better than the G6. Not you ?
In one domain the G6 is better than the v3: ergonomics. Thats all.

From what I have been reading and the sample pics I have seen I'm convinced that the DSC-V3 and the G6 both are excellent cameras. I think there's quite alot of discussion on different forums comparing these two against each other.
As I see it you can't really say that one of them is superior -they both have their pros and cons with different features appealing to one or the other person. The thing is to narrow these differences down. If one are not too picky about his/hers choise of camera I think either of them would be a great buy!
In my case I would probably have gone with the Canon if it had the body of the Sony -mostly because of the Canon lens AND because of the apeture-issue/problem with the Sony. Now I will go for the Sony since I think that the Canon is plain ugly (just a matter of taste).
Anyone knows how the Sony gets charged? I mean do you have to take the battery out? -Or do you connect the camera directly to the charger? A friend of mine is buying a Sony for me in the states -and I might be in trouble due to the electricity-difference (I have 220V here i Denmark..)

You can charge it in the camera or buy the external charger!

I checked out the 7070 in my local camera store the other day. It seems nice -but a little big for my needs...
