    Problem with DMC-FZ3

After reading many reviews, I recently purchased a Panasonic DMC-FZ3 because I wanted an all round easy to use, lightweight, compact camera that would also take great shots of distant objects, such as ships and aircraft. However, when viewing images on my PC, distant objects taken at full optical zoom appear pixellated, as though I am using the digital zoom (which I am not). I am using the largest picture size and fine quality settings. Am I doing something wrong, or should I simply accept this problem with a 3 mp camera?

    Problem with FZ3

Thanks for the reply - all appreciated. Actually, I've not yet printed any photos taken at 12x zoom but I will do so when I am back on my home PC this evening.

The Fz3 takes sharp pictures at 420 mm.

If you don't use digital zoom.
    If focus is ok.
Not to mutch movement by handshake or target.
    When taken on 80-100 ISO.
With ISO 200 there is some noise.
With ISO 400 , the noise is very visible, specialy in low light.

    What do you mean.. pixelised?

    Problem with FZ3

Thanks for the reply Don. The best way to describe it is like the effect you get when using digital zoom. I did wonder if it was caused by heat haze, but there is not much heat here in the UK at the moment, plus there was no discernible heat haze effect when viewing the same subject through 10x power binoculars. I had set the ISO setting to 100 and it was taken on a fine sunny day too, so I wouldn't have expected many problems.

I don't know if it's possible to upload a sample image to this forum, but I will do so later if I can.

    Thanks,
    Phil

How are you viewing the photos (OS, program, how much magnification, how are you downloading them?)

The pictures should be beautiful when viewed full screen on a monitor.

Even If digital zoom is used, if the light is sufficient pictures from the FZ3 should be very nice.

Noise reduction can cause a strange effect on some pictures turn it to low.

    Problem with FZ3

Here is a sample photo to explain what I mean. I use win XP and have viewed the photo in both the xp photo viewer and in photoshop. I download photos using the software supplied with the camera.

    Question

Never noticed that on my fz3...

It looks like oversharpened or overcompressed...???
Are you sure the menu is in quality priority?

Is it only with far distance?

    Do a few tests.
Shoot at 420 mm an object 20meters,40 meters...

Download the files with the explorer from Windows.

Download the pictures also on an other pc.

They should look fine in full-screen mode.

    PS.
My files are about 1.3 Megabyte disk-space.
    What are yource?

    Problem with FZ3

Thanks for the reply Don. I should say that it occurs only with distant subjects. I've taken great shots of things up to about 100 metres away using 12x zoom. The quality setting is set to high. Is there another quality setting I should use?
