    Iceland

Will sneak in this vacation post just before these forums are closed.

Was in Iceland during the last two weeks of June, some pics are below to give people an idea of what's there. Iceland is a relatively expensive country to visit, but not as bad as Norway I feel. An interesting result of the high cost of visiting Norway is that about half of the visitors in the capital city area are well off seniors, and the proportion of well off seniors increases to around 80% of visitors farther away from the capital city area. Of course, with such a well off group of visitors, dSLRs were everywhere. I was impressed with what I guess was a 500mm f/4 Canon on a tripod carried by one older looking woman...I did see a D4s with a 24-70 too.

I think roughly half of Iceland's visitors just stay in the Reykjavík area and don't venture more than a day's drive from the capital city area...but the capital city area is what really really will make you go through your money very quickly. Because I was on tour (http://www.exodustravels.com/ca/icel...-iceland/avd-0), about lets say 8 days where I didn't manage to spend more than $10 Cdn/Aus/US a day outside of the tour cost. Most meals were included and dinners were superb. Wi-Fi is everywhere but internet cafes are non-existent.

After the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull in 2010, there was a large drop of visitors that year but a huge increase after. The hotel infrastructure is somewhat inadequate, schools are converted in the summer for accommodation purposes (but with great breakfasts and dinners still) and washrooms are often shared and usually cramped.

As for taking pictures, the frequent rain and cloudy days aren't helpful but low lying fog is a killer. Seems that my D5100 handled the rain and moisture well.

Geysir area, probably not that impressive if you've been to the Rotorua area in New Zealand
