Distance for Portraits

If I wanted to to portrait photography, like a studio does - practically, how much distance is necessary from the camera to the subject?

I am asking, to figure out if I'd have enough room in my apartment.

You'd think someone with plans to create a portrait studio in their apartment would have taken enough portraits to know how far from their subject they should stand.

Jnr it kinda depends on what sort of portraits. Head shots ? 3/4 ? Full body etc. I'd estimate that you need a bare minimum of 3-4 metres. More like 5 or 6 if tou eant to set up a background and use some rim lighting. The bigger issue is the width if you are using lights. Again, something like 3-4 meters is your bare minimum.
