    Nikkor ed 80-200mm f/2.8d

Is it worth spending almost triple on the 70-200 2.8 over this older lens?
    Sharpness, IQ, CA?

    Any thoughts would be appreciated

I've rented the 70-200mm several times....and then eventually bought the 80-200mm and couldn't be happier. The lack of VR is a total non-issue in my opinion for what I use it for. I think the bokeh on the 70-200mm might be a little more pleasing....but other than that I think the image quality is on par, and the build quality is solid. Obviously it doesn't have the built in focus motor, which actually makes it a bit lighter than the 70-200mm...(well that a couple other things) but you shouldn't have a problem with that since you have the D700. I'm no pro, so I couldn't justify the cost.....and as such, take my opinion with a grain of salt. But I think it's an excellent choice.....and a lot of people tend to overlook just because it less expensive.
