My original post was deleted as it was a little too far off topic. Sorry 'bout that. The great thing about this site is that you can come back up-to-speed pretty quickly, after being away for a while.
I'm thinking that there will be a lot of D700's (and probably D300's) on the secondary market by November/December, so if you're looking at these cameras I'd wait until then.
After careful consideration, the D800 is out of my league lens-wise, and beyond my budget. Until the D600 was leaked, I was looking at the D7000, but the D600 will fit nicely, and be a tremendous upgrade from my tried-and-true, but somewhat outdated D70. It has served me well. C'mon September.
