I'm looking for a lens to put onto my DX7590. I know they make a 55mm adapter to put on the camera, but can't I just screw one on using the threads? If so, what size do I need to get? My uncle says that a UV filter would be good. I don't know what to get because I'm new to all this. Any help would be appreciated.

The dx7590 requires the lense adapter. The threads for the adapter are down inside the camera along the side of where the lense comes out of the camera. The "threads" you see on the front of the lense are just steps in the housing.
