    D5100 Beware

FYI. It looks like there is an issue with the D5100. I had mine for 3 months and it began taking pictures that are just black like the lens cap is on. I googled it to see if there was a resolution and I found out I am by far not the only one with this issue. They have had my camera for 2 weeks now. Hope I get it back for the holidays and hope it is fixed for good.

Anyone here have this issue? How long did they have your camera?

I haven't had this problem yet. It seems to be caused by shutter failure. There doesn't seem to be that many posts about this problem on the internet; I only found about 15-30 posts in total on a few different websites. Chances are that at least a few of the people reporting this problem post on a few different websites.

You could be right about the duplicate posts. I hope they tell me exactly what was wrong and what got replaced...but they probably won't.

There was one post I read where this problem happened a second time; that second time Nikon took the camera back replaced the shutter again.

On one forum board, something like half of the posters who had this black picture problem mention shutter failure as the cause.

The camera store where I bought it from would ship it to Nikon for me if I ended up with this problem.

Every product has a certain failure rate that's a fact. The only issue is how well the manufacturer addresses the issues that cause the failure and deals with the buyers who have had problems. Nikons general practice in both those regards has always been pretty good. I see no reason at all for the word beware to appear in the thread title other than if you are trying to sensationalise what is a standard warranty issue for some purpose.

Lol I love the title of the thread. Thought for a second that the camera may self destruct and blow half your face off if you selected the wrong wb.

How about D5100 Problem? Is that a better title? Doesn't look like I can change it. I didn't put a ton of thought into it. My intent was to fish for other consumers who may have had the same issue as I, in an effort to find out how long I will be without my camera and how many people have had the same problem.

It would appear only I and a few select others have had the issue. Just my luck I guess.
