Nikkor AF-S 40mm micro vs AF-S 60mm micro

I'm interested in macro photography as well as general portraitures. My question is, which of the following lense is sharper? Focal length is no prob. I need SHARPER one.

Nikon Nikkor AF-S 60mm f/2.8G

both are plenty sharp enuf. focal length is more important than sharpness for the purposes of this lens.

I've read that the 40mm is much too short for true macro work because you are going to have to get much closer than you really need to for the correct ratio. You may even block your precious light by getting so close. But macro lenses are supposedly extra sharp. I've been considering one for a good while now and am not sure which to go with either. I'll probably just not get one in the end.

That said, you might consider using a non-DSLR for macro shooting. Ferinstance: I use an older Nikon CP990 for macros as it can focus down to about 2cm. I rarely do macros anymore but when I do the 3.1MP sensor, smaller size, and tilt head, works well for such close work.

For about $80 used, it may be a better solution.

As an afterthought: It takes pretty good snapshots as well.

That's a really good idea. We should remember not to forget about cameras that aren't DSLRs. 2cm? wow that is pretty darn close. Do you get some interesting results at that close? I took a look at the CP990. It sure is a strange looking camera.
