Compositionally, #1 wins out for me.
Just needs a reflector to push some light back into the shadows to lift the reflection.

I also like #1 the best although i think it would be better with out the reflection on the bottom.

What's one of those? An Umbrella's an Umbrella, right. Well, not quite.

Look Switch, there's two basic types of Umb, Reflective or Translucent.
The reflective is more light efficient, especially a Silver one. This is good if you only have a small one, flash that is.
The Translucent or "shoot through" is less efficient but there again you can position it closer to partially compensate. A more powerful flash is desirable. Some come with removable backs, a sort of hybrid version, so they work as a reflective as well but not as efficiently.

The other thing is size. The bigger the Umb, the bigger the subject it will illuminate, providing your flash is adequate. A small one is Ok for your Baby shots and a head and shoulders of the Missus shall we say.

Don't forget you need an Umbrella bracket and stand.

Well, that's a little more difficult for me to answer but that does look like a good deal.

It been donkey's years since I've been anywhere near a hot light setup. The camera club had them and, as I recall, we were forever tripping over cables, sockets were never in the right place, it was b***** hot work, the bulbs were forever going pop and you burnt your fingers changing them. Apart from that, it was easy to tell when you had the right lighting setup.

I think someone should be able to offer more up to date advice.

Have to say I'm more comfortable with flash lighting these days although most of my older gear has had it apart from a Sunpak (GN150) which should come with a health warning.

So can you post a link of what I would need to buy to have a good umbrella flash system
