How do you set GN on a flash

I was reading this http://strobist.blogspot.com/2007/12...ash-meter.html and cannot figure out how to set the iso, aperture, and speed on my Flv42 flash.

    That's because you can't (AFAIK).
You may be able to get a calculator for your smartphone.

I have one on my phone but I still don't know how to set the flash to the right setting.

The phone asks you to input 2 of the following to get the third (Guide Number, Aperture and Distance). If I put in Aperture and Distance how do I set the Guide Number?

Not sure what to say Frank because you already know the GN of your flash.
Neither do I know whether the App allows for ISO and for focal length, presumably not.

I'd have to guess that, as you already know the GN, FL, ISO, distance and aperture you intend to use, you're really looking for an indication of flash power level. There used to be tables and stuff on the back of flash guns to help with all that but automation and 'manufacturer knows best' seems to have killed it all off.

You will however find the table in the back of your manual which tells you the GN for different FLs and power levels.
Of course, GN are always given at ISO100 so you will have to compensate for the ISO you intend to use; just increase the distance covered by 50% (easier than 44%) for ISO200 and double it for ISO400.

I didn't know where to find the gn for my flash. Manual????? What is that? I do keep it with me in my camera bag but haven't opened it since I got the flash.
    Thanks again

Here's the page you need, Frank.

I just checked out the manual. I guess they think the TTL is going to cover all you flash needs. I have the app Photo Tools it looks like a good app.

    Thanks again

I have a hard time adjusting my flash. I didn't want to have to buy a light meter to set the right aperture to setup the my flash and slave. As you know I have a hard time with all my flash shot.
