WB Question

This is what I thought but was misinformed on another site. The other question I have regarding in camera settings is if you adjust the sharpness in camera does this get affected by shooting Raw or JPEG?I bumped my sharpness up to +1 in camera since the first day I had it and never changed it.

Raw is just raw data, there should be no settings applied to RAW. The in camera settings just apply to the JPEG output, I prefer to apply the changes in post processing, I have all the control I want, or I can just convert without doing anything. With RAW I have a choice, JPEG is restricting. The only advantage of JPEG I can think of is file size.

I shoot only RAW unless I am shooting a birthday or something where I want to give all the images to somebody right away then I shoot RAW+JPEG.

RAW processors are improving all the time; same with your own skills in using the software.

You can go back to earlier RAW images and use the latest RAW processor combined with your own improved skills to render an improved image.

Once a JPEG is processed in camera, the changes are fixed for ever.

The only thing I don't like about shooting RAW is I don't know how to batch process all my images at once and have they look right. Do you make a preset for each type of shooting your are doing portrait, landscape, wildlife etc?

It depends on the RAW processor chosen but all of them have options for batch processing.
Most will deault to a standard setting for the chosen camera and you may be happy with that.

As it happens I use DxO which includes geometric corrections for specific lenses.
I also have two preferred custom presets (in addition to standard ones provided by DxO) for Landscape and Portrait images.
All I need to do really is set the WB which, in the preset, I have set to "Daylight" (in camera WB is UniWB).
This is dead easy to do, select the images which have a common WB and click a button to change them all.

I don't know which RAW converter you use but these things must be possible, I think.

I use Camera RAW but it don't have any Sony presets. I will check out DxO.

So far as I know, Camera Raw supports your camera so the defaults may not be so far off.
Of course the latest versions of Camera Raw only work with the latest versions of Photoshop so that may be a hindrance.

OnOne software give away some free presets but I don't know about the quality.

Maybe someone here uses ACR and can help out.

I just downloaded DxO. It looks real confusing. I am going to see if there are any youtube tutorials to watch. I have CS5. I watched a few good tutorials on camera RAW and you can almost do all your editing with just that.
