the reason that its only a silver rating and a relatively low score is cos its being classed as a semi-pro camera so rated/ scored Vs the d300s and 7D as opposed to where i think its probably aimed at which is the 60d. one would think if the camera were reviewed where it should have been, it would have been a gold award and in the high 80's. i would suggest that the K5 will be the category killer here and trump the lot of them.

the main issue i see is a bit of a metering overexposure issue in high contrast bright scenes and a smallish buffer. the main pro is the comments about IQ throughout the iso range. whats laughable is the comment dpreview made about auto-iso implementation.

It's Nikons fault for putting a black shutter release button on it then. Change the button back to silver and the rating will go up.

Yeah, that one made me wonder aswell. As I understood it, it's the same as on the D700 - and that's about the best one I've ever used. Made it seem like the guy reviewing the camera didn't understand how to use it in 1 second, and didn't bother/have time to check the manual - and just went "me no understand, me think this stupid be, me give bad review of this!!"

And regarding the final score... I'm just too confused about all the various "classes" the cameras are divided into now. It's amateur, semi amateur, a bit amateur, amateur, amateur with ambission, amateur with ambission and kinda almost enthusiast, almost enthusiast, semi enthusiast, enthusiast etc etc etc etc...

The auto iso settings are exactly the same as my D300 (I looked at the menu structure of both on DPReview to confirm and its the same) so I guess they are probably the same on every black button camera newer than the D300 as well.
I think there are two possible reasons for the comment either the reviewers were confused by the black shutter release button (Nikons fault) or they are fairy camera owners and are looking for a more complex way of achieving the same result.

Oh, but there are worse D7000 reviews.

There's another reason, I got it after reading the comments on Dpreview forum about D7K review : if you use a Canon camera more often (which don't have this feature) and accidentally you get to a last generation Nikon with Auto ISO, it IS difficult to understand something you didn't experience before... IMO auto ISO is a good tool to have ( used it sometimes on my D90) if you know how and especially WHEN to use it.
As for the score DPreview gave to the new camera - one have to understand that 60D was at stake and if the difference in score was closer to reality some of the financing may go away ...

But I equally think that the review is a quite ballanced one, even if including major mistakes (as stating RAW framerate for 14bit decreases to 2.5/s - copy /paste from D300s review?!?) and its appearance is a good thing to ballance other too happy reviews about the D7K - Ken Rockwell's for instance.

As for my present weighing D300s vs D7K, I am a RAW shooter, therefore the newer, better and more performing jpeg expeedII processor and new NR routines included in the camera have little - if any - importance for my style of shooting. While high ISO definitely look better than the ones from D300s, I did not sense the same difference in Raw images I've seen. Adding this to some of the advantages D300s still keeps on D7K - most important being larger buffer size and apparently slightly better AF/tracking for fast moving objects - it keeps me weighing both. And there's other more personal reason - my financial situation does not allow me in a foreseeable future to go for Nikon Pro glass.
Therefore the new 16mpix sensor will be difficult for me to 'fill" with the class of lenses I can afford...

Finally - as I said - final decision is yet to be taken!
