    I think it's a yellow-jacket. They have a nasty habit of nesting in houses, and will enter through a small opening to a crawl space or attic. If they are in your house, it's best to get a pro to eradicate them, sealing the hole will only trap thousands in your house and they will get out some other way. The new exit may be into your house, this would not be good.

    There is a worrying decline in the UK Bee population and I never swat Bees in the house but encourage them to leave.
    Same with wasps which do a good job in controlling some pests.
    I doubt I'd be so charitable with that many in the house.
    I just read up up (a bit) on your Yellow Jackets and .. could it be a German Wasp? Any dots on the face?
