My insurance company will replace with a like for like camera......My argument to the insurers is that the replacement is not fit for purpose, they don't have to give me a DSLR just a camera that has an adapter ring and a long shutter exposure time, their argument is that is no longer found on digital camera's so tough luck !

I think the insurance company is being fair here. Camera specs change and models are replaced continuously. My Fuji F30 had to be replaced and there is no longer a camera with similar low-light capabilities....so they can only do so much.
Perhaps you can ask them to pay cash for the value they are prepared to cover and put that towards a camera of your choice (even if that is a DSLR)
