My SIGMA 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM

    Yes! That's my newest acquisition

I had read numerous tales of front / back focus issues with these large aperture Sigma lenses ( 30mm 1.4 & 50mm 1.4) So, i immediately put her to the focus test!

The test subject were three AA batteries placed diagonally 10mm across and 10mm behind. The Camera was placed on a tripod 600mm from the center battery which was the point of focus.

I focused with the 'center focus point' in the 'One Shot' AF mode.

Here's a setup diagram for the focus test shots..

Here's the test results. All 100% crops:

So, what do you guys think?

And now for some 'proper' low light shots from this lens...

    Dad

    50D, Sigma 30mm f/1.4 @ 1.4, 1/200, ISO 1600.
Shot in sRaw1. No NR applied.

    Son

    50D, Sigma 30mm f/1.4 @ 1.4, 1/160, ISO 3200.
Shot in sRaw1. No NR applied.

    Why the 30mm 1.4 and not he 50mm 1.4?
Because I'm using this on the 50d which is a crop sensor camera, and on this body, the 50mm works out to an effective 80mm fov. I found this too long for indoor shooting. Whereas the 30mm works up to an effective 48mm fov and is closest to the 'Normal' fov.

Why I got this and not the Canon 35mm f/1.4 L?
Though the Canon version is a tad sharper and produces more contrasty images, it's almost three times the value of the Sigma

From where and for how much?
From the BH Photo Video, US @ $ 439 + shipping with 4yrs US warranty.

    Am I liking it?
So far, I'm loving it! However, this is still the honeymoon period

    Hope someone finds this useful...

    Vicky

Looks like a mild back focus at f/2.2 but that could just be the focusing angle.
My 30 f/1.4 is at Sigma for calibration. And my 50 f/1.4 is on the way.

    Nice sample shots btw.

Looks sharp Viky, I'm not a good judge of focusing issues.

Seems like a great lens, I was on the verge of buying one for my 40D.

Are you getting the Sigma 50/1.4 or the Canon 50/1.4.

    Siggy.
Should be here sometime this week.
Then when I get my 30mm f/1.4 back from calibration I'll decide whether to keep both or sell one.

Wouldn't have had an issue with the 30mm if the seller wasn't dishonest about it but oh well!

Hopefully the seller of the 50mm is more honest than the last guy.

I want to get rid of my 50/1.8, but just can't decide which route to go. I wish Canon would update the 50/1.4 to full ring USM, I hear a lot of bad stuff about the AF motor going out.

The Sigma seems like the best option without the cost or size of the 50L.

I think I'm going to try out some adapted lenses first and see how much stop down metering bothers me. But I keep seeing such good stuff about both the Sigma 50, it seems hard to pass up.

I'd be all over it in a minute! The 50 1.2 is also pretty bad.

From my understanding the siggy has better brokeh, and better Build/MF, but the AF is pretty much the same which isn't great.

    If i could get a split-prism, i'd get a siggy 1.4 i think, i like the build better.

For now, the 1.8 serves me well, and its very low-key, i call it my "tourist mode".

From what I've read and understood so far, its an inherent property of such large aperture lenses to have the focus plane shift backwards as you stop down the lens...

As of now, I'm mostly using this between 1.4 and 2.0
