non of them really pop for me

Conceptually, I like the first one the best.
I think the background is not very appealing. Either go with total white or shoot against a more interesting background.

I would agree that #1 is the most interesting. The darker background in #1 as compared to the others is better.
The greyish background, though, makes the OJ unappealing. I would try either a pure black background or pure white.
Keep in mind that aperature and distance from lens to subject to background will tend to alter the color of the background captured by the camera. As examples, this shot was actually shot with a nice rich blue sky in the background.

These shots were taken with the same background but changes to distance and aperature resulted in quite different looking backgrounds -

Nice stuff Darin.
Frank I agree that the top is most interesting conceptually, but the background struggles. Also it looks unnatural and pasted together. I assume the slice was added in post? Were the three parts (whole orange, slice, and background) composited together in post?

I couldn't figure out why the background was grayish when the wall is off white. Jason I added the drops in PS. The orange slice and orange were shot first.
Thanks

At a fast shutter speed, the ambient light is cut. So whites turn to grays, and ultimately black.
