Unhappy SONY A700 ... the end of the line

Today marks the end of the α700 as a "new" camera. It has been "officially" discontinued ... and a "great deal" is over. (12/27/2009)

There is no apparent "heir" to the throne.

If you did not get one of these, just know you missed a seriously cool opportunity for the bucks.

    Okay ... what's next?

Very few A700s left in the channel, it seems.
The good news for us A700 owners is that second hand price will harden and probably escalate.

Photography bay had that fake and it listed 10 fps and a 18mp Exmor sensor.

I'm curious about this one. The easy answer is for it to be a competitor to the D300s and 7D... a hi-res fairly hi ISO cropper with video and good speed. The A700 already had the good build, speed, and resolution that the 50D lacked and Canon fixed with the 7D, so I expect that will stay about the same.

But Sony is currently the camera company most willing to break things up a bit. The lowest priced FF camera, the only real LV system. They could do something different. I don't think it will be FF since it would leave Sony without a sports camera, but who knows? I remember some rumors back in the day of a less than 1.5x crop (like Canon's 1D) but I doubt that too.

Don, where did you see that the camera was officially discontinued?

P.S. I just have to slip this in... look at my sig. I had to keep up with Don and land a FF, but I still didn't quite have the budget for a new one. I miss hanging out with you guys (and in body IS) but I just can't quite afford an A850 & CZ glass yet (plus I want a better 35mm prime than the so-so G).

    Question Where to go ...?

    Jason,

You can go to either B&H Video ("Discontinued") or SONY Style ("OUT OF STOCK") for this confirmation.

If B&H Video could get them, I do not believe they would have stamped this on every version of the kit and body they sell. Adorama does not even list it in their inventory, only some "USED" one they have on hand. Kind of looks pretty conclusive.

Geez, $900 brand new from Sony style.... (was) a heck of a deal.

I see Adorama doesn't even have new ones listed now.

The article I read at Photography Bay said Sony will have a press conference for CES next week, so it seems like a fitting time.

There was an early December interview with Sony Alpha Division Director Toru Katsumoto in which he confirmed an A700 relacement but he wouldn't say when. He also implied that the delays in it's intro were due to bit of a rethink on features. He said that Sony intend to soon release products that break new ground technologically. ???

Whenever and whatever the new A7xx, I expect it to be a real cracker. I mean the A700 is pretty good and the replacement has to be better or why bother.

    To make money!

No matter how good a digital camera is, the companies can always get more money with a new model. Many A700 owners will upgrade, and many that have been on the fence about upgrading won't do it now because the A700 is "old." And to be honest, they do need a pick me up in the high ISO noise to be competitive with the 50D/7D/D300 for low light (event/wedding/conference) shooters. This camera is the closest thing to a D3 or a 1D(non-s) for a professional wanting to shoot Sony. The A900 just doesn't have the speed, and competes more with both the 5D/D700 class AND the D3x/1Ds class.
