    I've had good luck with the diffuser. Sometimes there isn't a ceiling or a wall to bounce off of.

    On flash diffuser, bounce it, fire through an Umbrella ... it doesn't really matter, they're all methods of diffusing the light.
    I would suggest, however, that an on-flash solution requires the flash to be off camera, for portrait work anyway.

    Flash diffuser is usually best. Bounce flash, while taking away the harshness, can create a Racoon look with shade spots in the eye sockets.
