D90, Tamron 28-75 tested at a lowlight performance.

First time I shot at at theatrical type venue with a DSLR although I shot at similar venues before with flash; so I know what to expect. Even that, I find this type of performance quite challenging. Especially bad when the performers wear white or similarly bright outfits. I think I would get better result if I put -0.3 EV and post process later.
Anyway, here is some samples from the new Tamron. My son is on the left.. the bugger forgot his lines.

I think I made the right decision buying the Tamron 28-75. I wouldn't get half as much keeper with the 16-85 in such low light. Another thing is that the 28-75 isn't too heavy for my liking - weight factor is the reason I ruled out the Nikkor 24-70.

I used matrix metering. What would you do? Not that the light was low but it was also too bright and not event on some spot and especially where the performers wore white. Would I get better result with -0.3 or -0.7 EV?

I've gathered a good amount of experience shooting in these situations now. I used to use matrix metering in P-mode and -3 to -7 EV depending on how the histograms looked after test shots.

Now I only shoot in Manual mode and in this particular situation (a stage where the lights don't change like a rock show) and I highly recommend it. Choose spot metering and single point focusing and get a reading from one of the player's faces. Once you get a good exposure, you can shoot all show long with good results. Generally, I start with ISO 1000 and f4 and see if I can live with the appropriate shutter speed. If not, I tend to bump the ISO up before opening the aperture but that may be because I'm shooting on the D700.

This shot was at ISO 800, f4, 1/100 (I shot others during this same show at ISO 1000 and 1250) But of course, it totally depends on how each venue is lit.

Do 13 oz. really make that much of a difference to you?

the fact that i still have the 24-70 despite the fact that i detest its weight, size and handling says something about the quality of that lens.
