poll: if you had $2k and a week to spend it..
What would you get? In some cases you already got it of course.. but feel free to chime in anyway.
- A850 body
- Three A700 bodies!
- A700 and CZ/G lenses
- A550 and lenses
- nothing but lenses
The time limit is to disallow "wait for the latest model xx" votes, even if that's your preference.
Try to get the a700 used if that is the route you want to go. No need to pay retail for an almost discontinued body. You should be able to get a previously-loved body for about $600 or so.
How to dispose of two grand ,,,
Well, Jim ... having lived this scenario, recently ...
I wound up with:
- a superior, high-speed prime lens (Minolta 200mm f/2.8 APO G HS) for ~$1000,
- a 72mm Circular Polarizer filter ~$89
- a MF 8mm f/3.5 "fisheye" lens ~$329
- a HVL-F58AM flash ~$359
- a HVL-F20AM Compact Flash ~$129
That and shipping kind of took care of it. Lenses and flashes
Although, if I had to reevaluate my bag from scratch, assuming I already had the FF-body & barring the "high and mighty" lenses ... with ~$2000, it might go something like this:
- SIGMA AF 24-70mm f/2.8 DG IF EX HSM ~$850
- TAMRON SP AF 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD MACRO ~$600
- TAMRON SP AF 200-500mm f/5-6.3 Di LD ~ $800
and yeah, i know that's $2250, but I also know that selection would cover my "lens needs" for quite awhile. Admittedly, getting my hands on a CZ 16-35mm f/2.8 would be awesome, but that is around $2000 all by its lonesome!
Anyway, hope that is helpful ... probably not. Ask "Rooz" ... he can certainly foist off the advice.

A Photographer Is Forever
Look, I did not create the optical laws of the Universe ... I simply learned to deal with them.
Remember: It is usually the GLASS, not the camera (except for moving to Full Frame), that gives you the most improvement in your photography.
Nothing but lenses and flash. I already have the A900.
I'd get the Sony 58 flash (about $350), a tilt-shift lens (about $650), and either a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 macro/Tamron equivalent or the Tamron 200-500mm.
Zooms: Tamron SP AF70-200mm f2.8 Di LD Macro; Sigma 28-90mm D macro, Konica-Minolta 18-70 f3.5-5.6
Primes: Minolta 28mm f2.8; Sony 50mm f1.4
Minolta RC-1000 remote commander
Calumet Cambo CC400 4x5 View Camera
YashikaMat 6x6 TLR
Minolta Maxxum 7000
w/ Minolta 35-80mm f/4-5.6 & Minolta 2800 flash
Minolta Maxxum 5000i
& Vivitar 728 AFM flash
wish zeiss would make a shift lens for the 900
If I had that money I would go for a CZ 16-35mm f/2.8 Lens.
Zeiss 16-35mm f/2.8, Zeiss 24-70mm f/2.8, Sony 70-200 F/2.8 G, Sony 100mm F/2.8 Macro
