Elisha, I'd go along with that apart from the SSM. My 200mm HS APO is faster than my 70-300mm G SSM.
It has a tried and tested mechanical system which, pound to a pinch of ***t will outlast the Sony SSM. And what price repairs on an SSM?
no way man. no way.
peter, despite SSM, you cant compare a 200 prime minolta pro grade lens to a consumer grade 70-300. there are different levels of performance depending on the lens. af-s is not "af-s"...they come in all kinds of speeds despite wearing the af-s moniker.

Yeh OK, I know the 70-300mm doesn't compare directly with the 200mm, especially in low light (where the zoom occasionally misses focus), but in good lighting conditions I would have thought the comparison to be valid, in any case it's the only one I can make.
I have to say that the 70-300 is not far behind in those circumstances, it just doesn't quite have the zip of the HS. The same goes for my 80-200mm HS APO G which snaps immediately into focus; I've heard the adjective 'brutal' applied to the focus action of this lens and I know what was meant, you can almost feel the lens squirm as the big element are thrust into position. BTW, my 28-135mm is almost as fast to focus.
I may be wrong but I really can't see SSM lenses being any faster, although I concede that they will be quieter.
As to noise, the 200HS is noiser than the 70-300G but not by much, the 80-200HS on the other hand is noticeably louder as the lens works the motor harder. Is the noise a problem? Not for me, though I'm sure it will to a Wildlife Photog for one.
So, for me, the question is do I accept a bit more noise for a lens built on sound mechanical principles that will last for 30+ years, or do I want a 'quiet' one with electronics that will surely prove more troublesome and expensive to repair. I think you know my answer, I think we also know it will fall on deaf (Sony) ears.
EOS 5D - Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, EF 35 f/2, EF 50mm f/1.8 Mk II, EF 70-210 f/3.5-4.5 USM, EF 85mm f/1.8 USM, EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro, Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 (with EOS adapter), 430EX, Canon S90 Nikon FE - Nikkor 35mm f/2 AI'd, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AI, Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AI, F to EF adapter, 2xVivitar 285, other lighting stuff Mamiya C220 - 80mm f/2.8 Gear Listflickr
I have to agree with you on those two lenses. On the other hand my Sony 50/1.8 wasn't exactly silent either.
But the 50mm f/1.8 was SAM and not SSM. SSM was ultra quiet to the point you think the lens is broken cause you don't hear a thing when you are outdoors.
The marketing blurb from Sony is that they bought in premade Zeiss lenses. Great lenses but the downside being that they were not optimised for the Sony cameras. The Sony G lenses now being the norm on the high end cameras, both compact, alpha and camcorder, are designed specifically to suit the cameras they are attached too thus giving the best possible performance.
