Here's a quick first couple of test shots with my 50mm f/1.4. almost all reviews show this lens as either a good copy or bad copy...i think i got a good copy. as far as i can tell, sharpness seems great for a f/1.4 lens...around the same as my 35L, maybe i'll do a comparison later.
i adjusted the lens adjustment on my 5d II to +4 and i think i got it just about right. times like these makes me think about putting money toward a lens align system.
anyway, without further ado, first shot is resized, second is 100% crop. all at f/1.4...lightroom default processing, just imported, cropped and exported.
1. X marks the spot.
1.5 maybe i should clean my keyboard.
2. my lovely office
2.5 maybe i should clean my office
3. my lovely desk
3.5 i should definitely clean my desk.
i'll do more tests later, but so far so good. looks like i was one of the lucky ones. judging by the keyboard shot and the pen, it looks to still be slightly backfocusing, but as long as it's consistent i can fix it.

one more thing, the lens cap is FREAKIN GENIUS!!!! you can squeeze the inside and take it off and put it on without removing the hood. i can kinda do that with my other lenses, but it's nowhere near as easy as with this lens cap.
woulda got adorama brand but they don't have them in stock yet.

Looks like a nice lens Adam. Why did you decide on this over the Canon 50mm?

Shhh...some Nikon lurkers might start bragging all their caps are like that.

it's sharper wide open...and the bokeh is on a whole nother level. check both 1.4 shots and look at the football(americano) the canon 50 makes vs the circle of the sigma(upper right corner of the comparison shots). http://www.circumlocution.org/random_pages/50/
the real question for me was whether i should get the 50L or the sigma. i did a TON of research and read every review imaginable. i'm aware of the autofocus problems a lot of copies of this lens has..but with the way lenses hold their value, i got no reason not to try it out. plus, i have 2 cameras, i don't mind sending the 40d in if i have to.
i used to own the canon 1.4, it's a good lens, it just needs to be updated.

if it wasn't for the 30d being the perfect price to feature ratio when i got into photography, the d200 would have been my first choice and i'd be shooting nikon today. well..that..and the fact that nikon is the devil.
seriously though, those caps are freakin awesome. a lot of times during a wedding ceremony, because most of the weddings i shoot last about 15 minutes tops, i end up leaving the caps off my lenses..and now i don't have to.

Do you usually put the caps on whenever you put the camera down? I usually leave the cap off as long as my hood is on.... I like to live dangerously...

For me, the main difference is the bokeh. The Canon's bokeh gets really "nervous" in many cases with apertures > f/2. The Siggy's bokeh is much smoother. Both are very sharp though, if you get a good copy.
Here's my Siggy on top vs the Canon below, both at f/1.6....(look at the bokeh in the bushes)...
(Honestly, I think they both look good here, but the Canon has a tendency for much uglier bokeh, especially with busy backgrounds.)
Siggy f/2 bokeh...

i'm talking about when the lens is off camera. but yea, i definitely put my cap on when i set it down.
one thing i don't do is use a protective filter. i used to til cw said he didn't...and by god, if cw doesn't use a filter, i don't use a filter.
and michael, the bokeh is pretty much the main reason i got it. sharpness is nice, but that bokeh is almost too smooth.

nothing special and nowhere near as good a bokeh sample as michaels, but here's one from last night...god i love the bokeh of this lens. still haven't done much AF accuracy testing. within 4-10ft it seems to be very consistent and will lock in as dim light as my 85 will....AF speed isn't as fast as the 85, but fast. i'd say AF speed is about the same as the 35L.
first one focused on the water bottle, 2nd focused on the volume buttons ont he side of the iphone. both at f/1.4
