my eg-s manual focus screen first try

well, looking at a wedding photographer's blog michael linked earlier this week inspired me to try my hand at manual focus. i think it would be cool to have that skill in my arsenal, i've always taken pride in the fact that i shoot 100% in manual mode, and hopefully soon i can be a semi successful manual focus photographer. that said, i don't see myself using it but maybe 5% of my shots, but you never know.

anyway, i ordered the eg-s "super precision" focusing screen for my 5d mk II. it somehow makes the depth of field thinner in the viewfinder simulating f/1.x apertures...and it works.

now obviously it's going to be easier on non moving subjects, but here are my first two tries with it. first with the 85mm f/1.8 @ f/2 and the second with the 35mm f/1.4L @ 1.4.

i ordered a lens today that i got a feeling can really use the eg-s. i won't spoil it yet, but i can't wait to try it out. i especially can't wait to try this out at a wedding reception in near darkness.

anyone else use one of these? how do you like it?

I've got one for my 5d and I tried it for a while, but I didn't find it that much easier to focus vs the stock screen for some reason.

And it made my f/4 lens quite a bit darker.

I now use just the stock screen, which I use for MF at times.

But I know that alot of MF's like the precision focus screens. Many of the MF's on the alternative lens forum on FM use them....

ok fine nick you guessed it. i picked up the cheapo zenitar 16mm fisheye for $205 shipped. i got the screw mount with a focus confirm m42 adapter since the ones made for canon have infinity focus issues.

here are a couple more from today. so far i tend to front focus, but i get pretty close most of the time. the second one was focused on the fly. he was laying down and heard something, got up and yawned. it's dim, but still quite a bit brighter than receptions.

    both with 85mm f/1.8...first at ISO 6400 f/1.8 1/200s, second at ISO 6400 f/1.8 1/100s
