Even with my 1600mm i don't 'need' a tripod..the moon is so bright even a f8 i can run over 250 at 100 iso...but it is nice to hold everything still

A long exposure causes blur, because you need to realize the moon is streaking around the planet @ 2318 mph. The Earth, itself, rotates at about 1000 mph. but if you are not "tracking" (click on this) ... do it quickly. Anyway ... keep shooting.

A Photographer Is Forever
Look, I did not create the optical laws of the Universe ... I simply learned to deal with them.
Remember: It is usually the GLASS, not the camera (except for moving to Full Frame), that gives you the most improvement in your photography.

Well, if you're having problems getting detail out of something like a moon shot, there's certainly no reason not to.

My 2¢...
I know I'm a newbie...
But I use the "sunny 16 rule"-- f/16, 1/100s, ISO 100; or
f/5.6, 1/500s, ISO 100.
Of course, I use a tripod and turn off the SSS.
Hope this helps.
