It comes out a little bright but i hit it with the tone curve and all the colors drop into place

That is damned well done handheld, then. My longest lens is 600MM EFL, and I couldn't imagine trying to handhold a moonshot (arthritic wrists/shaky hands notwithstanding).
It helps if you dial in a -1 to -2/3 exposure compensation for shooting the moon.

Well, if you're willing to put some serious effort in to your shooting setup you can make up for some of the lost zoom.

I won't post it here but I'll link to a pic I put up in the Oly sub-forum that I took with my 70-300 F4.0-5.6
