    Pocket wizard flex

I'm trying out the new pocket wizard system. For those that aren't in the know these puppies can communicate TTL info which means you keep the auto function of your flash and are not limited to IR line of sight wireless functions. I know there are a lot of people that think auto flash is overrated but another thing these new wizards can do is increase the sync speed of your flash from 1/200 to 1/400 AND you can use the hyper sync function of the flash to get SS of up to 1/8000! you can't do that with manual flash.

One of the big problems with these suckers is that they are prone to radio interference from canon's flashes. The other big problem is that they are freaking expensive!

I have had some missed shots even 6 feet away when using the 580 EX but mostly I've had trouble free usage so far.

A cool thing to note is that I can use my cheap Chines triggers ontop of the PW to trigger flashes manually while I use one flash on the PW system in TTL.

I'll do some side by side comparisons this weekend and test out the range with various flashes.

If anyone has any specific questions or tests they'd like me to try let me know.

People keep thrashing these cause as you said people think auto flash is overrated but I really would love HSS....looking forward to a comparison...

Btw there are rumours that the new Canon 7D might have a built in Flash Master which might be good news!!

If the 7D does have a master in it it will still only be IR which is limited in daylight and line of sight AND it'll be like 3000 bucks I'm sure.

I like TTL I dunno why it gets a bad rap. I hate messing up my exposures all the time by moving the light slightly in or out. Adjusting the flash output from a flash isn't the easiest thing in the world and if you adjust F stop value in camera to change for variations in flash power because of distance or angle then you change DOF which isn't ideal. Shooting weddings with this thing is going to be a dream.

The 7D is not a full frame camera. More like something to slot in between the 5D and 50D so doubt it'll cost that much though will find out on 1st of september...

Adjusting the flash output when the flash is high on a stand is annoying for a person like me who isn't very tall. Need to lower the stand - move to head - adjust - put everything back. So these are something I want, just wish they were cheaper.....

Where are you reading the rumors on the 7D? It'd be strange to a new camera in between a 5D mk II and a 50D. What size sensor/features are people expecting?

I totally agree about the price of these PW but it is pretty impressive to think about all the communicating they are doing through radio waves.

I can understand the flexibility of the new pocketwizard's features, however i think they are highly overpriced, especially considering the amount of problems people have had with them. Sure higher SS can be nice, but theres other options, way cheaper, and Im not a huge fan of some of the metering already going on, im not sure i want more metering, i'd rather do it myself whenever possible.

All in all, i guess its a niche thing, as im sure the people who use it, Love it to death.

For most, the whole point of the old pocketwizards was 100% reliability. If thats shot for some new features, well.. erm..

Personally, i'd prefer the radio popers over the new wizards, Knobs to adjust the power of your flash ?!? GOLD.

While we are on this topic, i replaced my Cactus V4s with some YungNuo RF602s, they are amazing, but i don't want to threadjack, so if anyone wants a review just pm me.

Threadjack away my friend! @ the complaints about the reliability, it's my main concern about these wizards but I've learned to take people on the interweb with a grain of salt and come to my own conclusions before deciding if a product is a good value so I'll give these things a run and see how I'll like em. I'll keep ya'll posted.

Oh and ya those radio poppers are cool. I love playing with knobs.

Canonrumour.com. I take their information with a pinch of salt unless its close to a release date so I've been following them for a month...
Supposedly the 60D will be release next year while a 7D is going to be released on the 1st with possible three new lens...I can't wait!!!

It is impressive but it's a high price to pay from my point of view when HSS is all I want for outdoor portrait and car photography....

Could you elaborate on cheaper options for HSS...??

Cheapers options -> Reflectors <3 (With enough creativity and some know-how you can beat the wind too.)

Radio popers are a competitor to the pocket wizards, which supposendly offer manual control from the Tx, on a range of flashes, including some canon, nikon, alienbees, etc.

The Tx, has 3 knobs for 3 groups, and the Rxs change the flashes output, at least thats the idea. Im not sure of its exact limitations but they have already been released i think, they were in production for quite some time.

So, place your flashes, group them accordingly, and you wont have to move from your camera again, you use the knobs to dial them up/down. Now thats something i'd prefer over HSS anyday, even in the studio, when lots of stuff is place and some light's controls get harder and harder to reach, it would be godsend.

Yes, its wireless i sorta forgot to mention the most important part, they use radio frequencys or something.
