So just for fun, and maybe some education, Peter, and anyone else who wants to chime in. The majority of people have a mix of primes and zooms, a few are more prime then zoom, and vice versa, I think the majority of people here shoot in the range of approx. 17 - 200mm a few go on up to 300mm and below, a couple like some reach and may suffer from big glass small....well never mind because i'm one of those guys! For your average well rounded kit what would be the THREE essential primes for it, and why?
    Always trying to learn something!

AHH true should have thought that out farther, was thinking in general terms, but true that isn't reall applicable is it.

general terms for aps-c i guess 35mm for a general all-purpose walkaround and something like a 105mm for longish portraits and short tele work.

Sean, choosing only three would be a problem. I suppose my favourites are the ...

    21mm f2.8
    50mm f3.5 Macro
    55mm f1.4
    135mm f2.8

OK, so I can't count, mind you the 135mm is not so useful on APS-C so it's slightly on the back burner until the A900.

At an equivelent 82.5mm, the 55mm f1.4 makes a good portrait lens; I took this Candid the other day.

Sweater and hands a tad overexposed but the face is good.
Strawberries, my favourite! (Oh except for damsons).

HHMM Ok I see compared with overall image a bit of over exposure in hands and sweater, I would be pleased with the image. It may be on personal likes and tastes of technical exam but the over exposure in the sweater works for me I 'like' that it seems like I could feel the sweater if I touched the image.
