    AF Micro Nikkor 105mm 1:2.8D?

What do you folks think about the precursor to the 105VR micro lens?

I've been looking for a decent Macro lens for some time, and now I have a chance to get a used AF Micro Nikkor 105mm 1:2.8D for around $420, and will take a look at in in person sometime this week.

Is the VR aspect of the newer Nikon 105 really worth the extra money?

Are there any caveats to the AF-D version? Reviews I've read suggest the AF-D is a great lens, and it's not clear to me I get many real benefits to the current version (other than age).

VR on a macro lens might be helpful for still life shots, but certainly not for critters as they buzz around. And for still life macros, wouldn't you use a tripod anyway? And with a tripod, you don't need VR.

I have the Sigma 150 macro (see signature) which also doesn't have VR. I never missed VR on it.

I'd say go for that used lens. And don't forget to whine a bit about the price ("it's a great lens, but look, I've got those 14 kids of mine to feed..."). ;-)

Thanks - for the advice. Actually, I'm in Japan and used lenses are a bit pricier here than other places. But I'll see if I can knock it down a bit.
