About a year ago, I picked up a Sunpak tripod/monopod combination at Best Buy for about $67. It's aluminum and weighs in at around 8-10 pounds. The monopod portion weighs only about a pound or two. It has a pan head with quick release. No where near the versatility of a ball head, but very stable.

Although it's not so fun lugging the full tripod around, it's full height. And, for the price, not too bad.
