The SONY AF 24-105 f/3.5-4.5 has been discontinued from the line. This Minolta hold over is no longer available and that seems a shame, in a way. It was very compact for the telephoto images it could provide. I suspect the SONY (TAMRON) 28-75mm f/2.8 will be the obvious affordable alternative. Doing my own comparison ... the (TAMRON) 28-75 lens seemed much sharper, so there is that.

yes it is a shame cos now only canon seem to offer that very useful range lens and do it well. the nikkor 24-105VR is on paper the perfect walkaround lens, in reality...its a piece of shit. 28-75, isnt quite wide enuf or long enuf for it to be a versatile lens.

I believe the "carry-over" was just to supplement the line until the DT 16-80ZA was released and the 28-75 took care of the A900's demands.

Personally, I think the Tokina offerings look quite interesting. Especially the 50-135mm f/2.8 ø67mm. If they do a good job of marrying the A-mount to it ... it could be a rather fun option. It is effectively a 70-200 on an APS-C sensor body ... so, a relatively light one, compared to the actual TAMRON or SONY 70-200mm f/2.8 on the A900.



The M.F.D. seems a little long, at 1 meter (39.3 in), but then again ... how close do you want at 135mm? It has a ton of elements to it (18 in 14 groups) and weighs only 30 ounces. It uses the same size filters as the TAMRON 17-50mm f/2.8 ø67mm & 28-75mm f/2.8 ø67mm. So, marry it up to a 17-50mm ø67mm and you have a very fit & trim two lens bag.

One of the things that always nagged me about when they introduced the Tokina 16-50mm f/2.8 ø77mm, last year, is WHY in the world they could not seem to offer the same filter size as the 50-135mm f/2.8 ø67mm? They opted for the more robust approach with a full ø77mm-filter. That's the same as a regular TAMRON or SONY 70-200mm f/2.8 ø77mm lens. Weird ... Perhaps Hoya just wanted to sell more filters! I mean, it is THK after all.

I think it would be tough to get that wide of a range with f/4 and G quality, at least without being bloody heavy. On advantage of the Canon 24-105L is that it is compact and light compared to the Canon 24-70L, or Nikon or Sony 24-70 f/2.8.

i see your point but if 25 years ago they could make a 28-135mm at F4-4.5, they should be able to do something similar with 24-135 me hopes.
i love the range of the 28-135 but an extra 4mm in the wide end would probably make it much better with a better MFD.
