nope, not the same. if i take a photo with my 50mm lens at 1.4 its not the same bokeh or dof as if i took it with the d300. there are small differences in things like smoother colour transition, light to shadow transitions etc. small yes, but having shot the d300 i know when something looks a tad different. sometimes for the good, sometimes for the worse.

while in essense what you said is correct, its not quite as simple as saying that aps-c is simply a smaller image circle. for example, the pixel photosites are completely different sizes on aps-c you are squeezing 12mp's into a smaller area. on FX you are squeezing the same amount of MP's onto a larger surface area. so it would make sense that there are small variations in the way these photosites respond to light etc.

yep, also notice the OOF areas are smoother. and the highlight bokeh in particular, (top right frame), is larger, smoother and far less apparent in the frame.

Take two different bodies and two different zooms; set one to roughly 55mm and the other to roughly 88mm; choose different apertures for good measure and do a comparison.

I hope that nobody here is surprised to see that the results are not quite the same. And of course the Bokeh is different, how would it not be with two different lenses?

The last post in that thread (#13 michaelb) demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the mechanics of DOF.
Same focal length and same distance using FF and APSC cameras; zoom in on the FF to get a head shot (similar FOV) and surprise, surprise the DOF is shallower.

No I gotcha that their different, be it two different lenses, or two different bodies (one FF, the other APS-C).

So yes, the A700 and A900 are different. But the A900's crop and A900's full 24.6MP are the same in the center because it's a straight crop of the main image to eliminate the vignette.

This talk on this thread was about any differences between the A900 in FF and crop mode at the same magnification. The answer being that there is none; DOF and Bokeh are identical.

So you've just spent a load of dosh upgrading to a FF camera with a more sensitive sensor and "there are some small differences"; I hope so.

Absolutely the DOF (and therefore the Bokeh) of the 50mm f1.4 on your FF D700 will be different when it's on the APS-C D300; how could it be otherwise?

If you want the DOF to be the same (why would you?) you'll have move your feet until the magnification is exactly the same and you'll have to be accurate to a fraction of an inch. Don't know how you'll manage that.
