The LV - VF compromise is really a Sony thing. The Sonys with LV have a smaller VF because of the way that AF is implemented for LV. Sony puts a second, smaller image sensor up in the prism casing. It is an innovative solution.

Oh! and I don't think HD video is an option either.
Thanks, that's what I was trying to say....

You're right, HD video wouldn't be an option at the current state of LV.

I could deal with the contrast detect system used in my Sony P&S being used for LV. Whatever contrast detect AF is in LV on the Rebel XS stunk.

I think that new Panasonic offers contrast detect AF during video. That would be nice.

Canon have filed a patent to address that problem.

Still looks like it wouldn't allow for phase-detection AF during video. But as another way to do what Sony does, it looks like a winner.

Some engineer is going to figure this out. I expect there is a good way to allow for phase detect AF during LV and video, all without compromising the viewfinder.

Or maybe things will go like Micro 4/3, and just use a really good digital viewfinder.

    Cool IPreview, too

And Intelligent Preview. I for one could make use of that.

Look, I'm easy - and all parts are available today. Just take an A200, drill in an extra scroll wheel, then take the A700 guts and screen and stick 'em in. Add the two above features from the A900 and shake (gently!). Do Not use a new, smaller body / battery , a 230k screen or the new button layout! And oh yeah, I get the first one free for thinking of it - yeah, like a thousand others haven't said extremely similar things!

Not that I _WANT_ to give up the optical viewfinder personally.

I'd rather they take the 40D, A700, and D300 and just keep increasing dynamic range, low light sensitivity, and battery life. Put the higher res screen on the 40D that the A700 and D300 have. Maybe lens micro adjust and FPS. I really like the LV on the 40D because all I use it for is the tripod.

Then do the same thing full frame.
