i'm thinking of selling a few things to get the Sigma 24-70 F2.8 EX DG Macro.
it's a beast. i held a Nikon mount one in the store the other day and the build is awesome.

The Canon really streets for around $1200 or under. Adorama has it for 1190, adn I think BH is similar.

But a lot of people think the "brick" is due for an update. Many seem to like the 24-105L better.

Sony still has a big edge b/c of IS on the 24-70 f/2.8. And when Canon and Nikon release them, they will be steep.

Any news on that 24-105G?

I'm pretty sure that was a fake.

As for the Sigma, Elisha, I don't think it's even a fair comparison of lenses as Don pointed out. For a budget F/2.8 zoom, it's hard to beat the Tamron 17-50 or 28-75. The HSM is more than double the price of these lenses and the non HSM one is about equivalent in quality to the Tamron's but is more expensive.

the Sigma I am referring to is about $599 which is the same price as the Tamron 28-75mm. The HSM is about 1k more lol.
I'll have to wait till I get my tax return first before I buy it or else I'll get a spanking from the wife!

My goal is to narrow down my lens collection to about 3-4 lenses only for now. A 50mm, 24-70mm f2.8 and hopefully the 70-300G.
I have been considering the ZA 16-80mm as well but not convinced about it yet.

that's a good price. where would i have to ship to if i need warranty work?
the Sigma is a 10 year Canadian warranty and the Sigma center and distributor is about 1.5 hours away from me.
i'm gonna check if i can find the Tamron as cheap locally.

Elisha, I would recommend calling TAMRON, directly, and asking such questions. In that way, you have a much more finite answer to your question.

I'd like to narrow down to about 6 lenses, 2 bodies and maybe 2 flashes (58 and 42?). (although for any given outing, I would only have 2-3 lenses, depending).

Sounds like a pretty ideal setup. Having 16mm on FF and 400mm on APS-C is such a great possibility. Here's some devil's advocate food for thought though.

I'd say in the short term you could get the 17-35 f/2.8-4 and the Sony 70-300G. They are about a 1/4 of the price, and offer a lot of the quality. You and I have never even had an UWA, so I doubt we would miss another stop of light, when you're already getting into the 24-70's range, and if you are selling your 75-300, you probably can get away with not having 400 for a while.

Other than that, the layout is hard to beat. Might be nice to add something like the CZ-135, or the CS 16-80 as a walkaround for the APS-C. Since moving to Canon, I now have access to a lot of lenses I wished I had on Sony, but Canon doesn't have something of the quality, range, and price of that 16-80. Closest we have is a 17-85 4-5.6 which isn't known for great quality, and is obviously quite a bit slower.

I think you might be able to do something different on the flash. The 42 would be nice for travel. It's always good to have an on-camera tilt, swivel TTL flash for quick and dirty. However for the price of a couple of 42AMs, you can buy pocket wizards and Vivtar 385's instead. However, the Minolta wireless flash seems to be the best, and in most situations works as well as the pocket wizards.

Also I'd add the CZ 135. Good sports lens on APS-C and good portrait lens on FF.
