dbatapbr, sorry to hear about your troubles. Unless you're totally paranoid about backups, everyone will suffer from data loss at some point, which is absolutely no comfort when it happens to you.
If you have an identical drive, swapping the circuit board over may do the trick, I've had success in the past. If the drive motor is gone it's possible to swap the platter but not recommended for DIY. Any dust left behind will soon trash the surface and the heads.
No warranty. However, I have met someone who says that he has software that will get the data. It will keep the photos in their folders. The only downside is they will not have a name. I will have to go in and rename them all. It will be awhile before I can get to it, we are really crazy at work right now. I worked Sunday and that was the first day of two weeks straight without a day off. I will post the results here.
