I didn't quite catch what he was saying at first either. He means you attach a rubber hood to the 77mm CPL, then that becomes the hood for the smaller lenses when you put it on them. I assume there is a good chance that 77mm rubber hood would obstruct the 70-200mm's attached lens hood, but I am not sure.

That's why you screw it off and on. Indeed, the 70-200's flower-petal lens hood is far superior to the rubber hood. Heck, it was designed for the lens!

But a 77mm multi-coated (HOYA) CPL with a 49mm to 77mm step ring set would be good.

49mm for your 50mm F/1.7 (although will probably vignette a bit due to the "hood" of the rings .

Ryan ... a general rubber lens hood (<- click here) is only around $10. Knock off a lunch or two, you can afford it.

That is a REALLY BIG piece of glass. Geez. You know, it kinda doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense for a good CPL or UV filter to cost way more than a nice set of eyeglasses with all sorts of fancy coatings.
