Thumbs up Don's 28-300 at work

Don was kind enough to sell off his Tamron 28-300 that was surplus in his army of glass. It arrived yesterday afternoon.

I fired off this shot of my daughter's champion rooster overseeing one of his prized hens, just to verify the lens worked.

Considering it was almost dark, not bad.

Then it was off to cover high school basketball, and here are a few.

    Shot from about 50' away.

This was from about 75' away.

These players were at a dead run, off the break.

This is at full zoom, where some say this lens struggles with sharpness.

All are resized down, and there is some cropping of the hoops shots, normal to trim excess area from shots you can't possibly "set up".

All are hand held action shots, SSS on (of course), shot jpeg, not raw, and with NO opportunity to fine tune ANY shooting settings, or adjust any color, balance, etc.

This was I thought a good test of the lens' inherent ability to catch action at various ranges, and with less than optimum lighting. These should be examples of the "floor" for this lens' ability.

(I don't think the pink tinted paint the school must have gotten on sale at Home Depot was a helpful idea!)

Don did have this lens factory tuned up, which was probably a good idea, and one reason it seemed to be a good acquisition.

Thanks Don, this lens just became my always mounted, ready to go setup for situations where I can't predict the shot.

I'm looking forward to doing some more experimenting, and actually figuring out what settings the lens is at it's best with.

Nope that got replaced by the Tamron 70-200mm

It'll make a good all-purpose lens and will be FF ready!

Nah, Peter ... my only 70-200 G SSM went back to SONY as defective. The aperture would not close down ... so it was a constant f/2.8. That's kind of worthless, outdoors. I prefer the much lower cost of the TAMRON 70-200 f/2.8 anyway. IQ is just as good and less than half the price.

Glad the lens got to you safely, Andy. That's two for two, this week. Yeah!

Look, I did not create the optical laws of the Universe ... I simply learned to deal with them.
Remember: It is usually the GLASS, not the camera (except for moving to Full Frame), that gives you the most improvement in your photography.

Panda congrats on the new glass! you may want to search back in the foirum for the thread on shooting low light high ISO custom settings with out flash. I have had a blast playing around with them and have got some pretty nice shots.
