That was actually how I discovered the aperture slide early on. The 35-70 that I bought came with a cap that just said MAX. It isn't as big as the caps that came with my Sony lenses, and does not open the aperture. However the nice thing about the ones that don't open the aperture is they fit on 3 ways, instead of only when lined up 1 way.
I had been meaning to ask why they hold the aperture open. I think Canon doesn't do this, I don't know about Nikon.
