mini flag ship
Well they probably would want to have an APS-C flag. (D700/D3x and D300, 5dM2 and 50D?/40D)
And then new technologies (backlit sensors? exmor-R) are always outpacing older ones which is why it is inevitable for improvements.

no way is it gonna be a backlit sensor, dont be kidding yourselves. its going to be a 15mp a700 with LV and video mode with a few other minor incremental improvements. thats it. the LV and video are essential, one would hope that it also inherits the LV flip screens from the lower models aswell. if anyone is expecting more than that then they are going to be very disappointed.

'Rooz' ... did they call you directly, when they decided this? Or was it just something you overheard in a SONY board meeting? I have to admit, a backlit sensor would just be such a major kick to Canon and Nikon ... it probably would crash their stock, once the implications were truly understood. No one is ready for that, right at the moment. It would be way too hot.

I certainly don't have my hopes much higher than what Rooz is saying. I doubt they will have the backlit sensor up from 5mp listed in that article to 15mp already. I don't think the 5mp is even in production yet.
I certainly hope I am proven wrong, but I'm going to hope for the best and expect the ok.
I think what Sony could really do to shake things up is release a lower end FF, using a sensor in the 12-15MP range, like the D700, for less than $2k. It would probably be sold at a loss, but it could really draw people to Sony. They currently undersell CaNikon on the low end, (A300 for ~$550 vs XSi for $650) maybe they could do it in the mid-range.
Hopefully we will see a further improvement in high-ISO/low-noise over the current bodies. And something with better high-ISO performance than the A700 is really all I want right now. Well, beyond the money to drop on one.

Powerful indoor glass ...
If SONY released an AF 200mm f/2 SSM lens ... then they'd have a severe competitive draw in the market. That would be such an excellent indoor athletics or theater lens for a full frame. Minolta didn't even have one of those, as I recall, just f/2.8
Of course, a 100mm+ first element would be quite weighty (roughly 5lbs for the entire lens), also.
Between that and the CZ 135mm f/1.8 ... your "party selection" would be complete!
