D40 and Pulsating Black Dots during Preview

Today while taking some photos I started getting some weird pulsating black dots on all of my images while previewing them on the LCD. Depending on the photo they all show up in random places but it's really weird. They pulsate on and off in about one second intervals for as long as the photo is on the LCD. I'm attaching a few shots of this problem.

Does anyone know what this is?

Although, the first place of great knowledge was missed: The user guide!

As is written by the ancient ones: RTFM (although, in all fairness, the D40 user guide bites it!).

I wonder how many Nikon DSLRs have arrived at service centres with this problem?

No need to feel dumb. This kind of thing can happen to everybody.
And simply leaving this thread here might help others who have the same problem, even if it scrolls out of the first page. There is the forum search, and maybe even Google indexes the forums here on a regular basis.

Sadly, people dont utilize that feature. Stick around long enough and youll see the same questions asked over and over again!
