    macro lighting for Canon SX10?

Hi. Is there some kind of light I should use for taking super-macros on the Canon SX10? It is able to focus on things that are on the front of the lens, but more often than not it blocks out all the light. (So a 15", ISO 1600, F/2.8 exposure would still turn out black.) This especially happens when I have something that fills the frame with the object, and I can't backlight it.

Is there some light that I could use so I could use the lowest available ISO setting, not have to open the lens wide, and have a fast-enough shutter speed to handhold it even with IS turned off? And what would such a light cost? I would prefer not to pay more than about 1/6th to 1/8th the cost of the camera... so what's available (and if it's not that cheap, how expensive would it be)?

Also, is there some plugin I can get for GIMP that will correct the (barrel, etc) distortions inherent in such images?
